The ultimate goal of the First Steps For Parents program is a healthy, well-informed mother to give birth to a healthy, full term baby.  Experienced obstetrical nurses will screen the expectant mother for risk factors.

Key elements of the program include:
  • Scheduled contacts with the expectant mother every four to eight weeks (depending upon identified risk factors) for continuing education and to act as a resource for the family.
  • Educational materials are selected and forwarded to the expectant mother specific to her individual needs.
  • For “at-risk” pregnancies, the nurse case manager will develop a plan to include the identified risk factors and appropriate interventions and education to promote a healthy full term pregnancy.
“First Steps For Parents was a great resource for me.  I read an extensive amount of resources throughout my pregnancy, but nothing compared to the advice and assistance I received from the First Steps nurse.”

The March of Dimes (2006) states:

“Every day 1 in 8 babies born in the U.S. arrives too soon. Premature birth can happen to any pregnant woman, and no one knows why. It is a serious, common and costly problem.”

"In 2003, hospital charges for newborns without complications averaged $1,700.  In contrast, hospital costs for infants born too soon or too small averaged $77,000."
